Listening to music in the car is incredibly common, and you can find many people who will tell you that they almost never go on a drive without music playing. They think it’s very normal, and they don’t consider it to be an issue at all.
Unfortunately, this is not always true. The reality is that listening to music can significantly impact someone’s driving ability in a few different ways.
1. Singing along
First of all, if someone is singing along with the music, then they are distracted. They may be looking at the road and holding the steering wheel, but they’re not thinking about driving so much as they are thinking about the lyrics to the song. This is a cognitive or mental distraction that could cause an accident.
2. Slower processing times
If the music is too loud, some industry experts warn that this can actually hinder your brain’s ability to process information, including visual information about the road ahead of you. The music is overwhelming and distracting, and the driver may miss key factors that they otherwise wouldn’t have overlooked.
3. Increasing speed
Finally, some drivers who listen to fast music will unconsciously increase the car’s speed. They get excited by the song, and so they drive faster and more aggressively. This could lead to an accident simply because of how they’re responding to the music, whereas choosing something else—such as a soothing classical piece—would not have had the same impact.
Have you been injured by a driver who was distracted by their music? If so, take the time to carefully look into all of your legal options.
